BHYC is all over the place!

>> Wednesday, August 4, 2010

The Merrick Center is a calm respite from the hectic activity of the past two days, which brought in over 100 sailors for our Bay Head Jr. Race Week, where BHYC sailors fared quite well--you can view the results here.

The rest of the week has our sailors all over the region. We've got 17 sailors and three coaches in Newport at the New England Championships--click here to follow their results. One of those sailors, Carolyn Corbet, has just returned from England, where she competed in the British National Championship, finishing 30th out of 84 in the Senior Gold Fleet. Well done! Our 420 travel team, BFAST, is heading up to New England this weekend first for the Buzzards Bay Regatta then the CJ Buckley Team Racing Championships in East Greenwich, CT next week. Good luck to all!

As quickly as it came on the summer is winding down, with only 2 1/2 weeks left in program! Lots of exciting things happen during those last few weeks, however. Our Greenies begin racing next week at the Rookie Regatta and then travel down bay to the No Tears Regatta at Toms River YC. Our Optis and 420s will be team racing at our own Merrick Team Race Championship, and the August Opti Regatta and Cattus Trophy will determine our club champions.

Heavy Heat

>> Wednesday, July 21, 2010

After a long, hot, and successful day down in Lavallette, many of our sailors took a more leisurely pace today to beat the heat, especially after unloading all of the boats off the trailers. We're looking to get back in the swing of things during the rest of the week, practicing proper protest procedures and getting ready for what is usually a big-air event, next week's Junior Olympics.

Thanks to Austen for the above photo and to the Kelloggs for the pool!

Barclay Cup Champions!

>> Friday, July 16, 2010

Once again our opti teams represented the club in Bristol fashion, winning the Barclay Cup Team Race Challenge for the second year running. This regatta, meant “to promote club loyalty and encourage sailing among young sailors,” has been staged since 1928, and its previous winners include many local legends. You can read about its history and past winners at this link.

Intermediates @ MRYC Interclub!

Meredith and Alix took a TON of photos and video at yesterday's Interclub, and then this morning projected them onto a whiteboard to debrief the regatta.

You can see the video and photos on our Flickr page.

Ironman / Powder Puff Week

>> Thursday, July 8, 2010

This week's events are the ever-popular Ironman and Powder Puff, where the boys and girls race in their very own regattas. Today's Ironman started off light and variable, but the afternoon provided some sunshine and steady breeze. Our boys fared well, no doubt spurred on by the great support from the girls that showed up to cheer them on... and throw water balloons! No doubt the boys will be in a mood to show similar, if not greater, support for the girls in tomorrow's Powder Puff regatta.

Much thanks to Jen Cunningham for emailing the above picture of the Intermediate opti group getting a little pep talk from Meredith at lunch during the Ironman. If you ever have shots that you want on this blog, or posted on our online flickr photo page, just email them to bhycjrsailing@gmail.com.

Please make sure your child comes all sunscreened up and armed with lots of water!

The first opti event of the year will be this Friday, an Interclub at MRYC. Our sailors in opti Red, WHite, and Blue will be participating, more details to come...

Rustbuster

When the NJ State championship was abruptly postponed a day before racing began, lots of families and juniors felt a little disappointed not to sail in the blustery westerlies. So we made it happen with a spur of the moment, free regatta open to all. Thanks to Brian Hull for helping get GSOT, MCYC, MYC, and SSYC involved with us on this.
