Week 3 Notes

>> Monday, July 11, 2011

Last week BHYC juniors had some great results in the Ironman and Powder Puff Regattas. Notably, Brooke Naylor placed first overall in the Powder Puff opti fleet, and Carolyn Corbet won the Red division. You can view complete results online at the BBYRA Jr Sailing results page.

We've got a pretty light week as far as regattas and traveling are concerned, so we'll be getting some good practice and fun days in while we can. The only regatta this week is the Barclay Cup, and next week we've got the LYC Team Race and Opti regatta and our first Interclubs.

Barclay Cup is an opti team racing event at LEHYC on Long Beach Island. We'll be sending six optis, two teams of three each, with teams to be determined by tomorrow. We'll send out more info to the team members then. We'll be looking to defend our 2x champions status and win another burgee for the Merrick Center. For more info, NOR, history and past winners (1997 was a big year) of this very prestigious event, check out this link. Cost is $40 per sailor.

The LYC Jr. Team Race
for 420s is a week from today, Monday the 18th. The 420s are working on team racing this week, and we will determine our two teams to send in the next day or two. We can send a total of 16 sailors and 6 boats (8 members per team, which includes an alternate skipper and crew). Cost is $55 for each boat.

The LYC Caryn Wilson Memorial Opti Regatta is the next day, Tuesday the 19th. If you have not registered your child, please do so with this form as soon as possible. We'll be taking the 20-boat trailer down, but it will be filled with boats from the Opti Intermediate group. We likely WILL NOT be able to get other boats on the trailer to LYC, so please make a plan on how to get your opti to LYC for this event. There will not be program here at BHYC for those not attending, as all of our coaches will be at LYC.

Thursday the 21st there is a 420 Interclub at NBYC and on Friday the 22nd is an Opti Interclub at MCYC. We will be towing or sailing to these events, and your junior should come with a lunch packed. Registration is on-site and free. More detailed info to come next week.

To compliment the program's reusable water-bottles, our coaches will have 3-gallon water coolers at regattas so our juniors will have access to cold water all day long. Please be sure they are using refillable water-bottles--the BHYC bottles with the burgee are good, but any refillable bottle like a nalgene or aluminum bottle will work. We're looking to become a leader in US Sailing's initiative in cutting back on the enormous amounts of plastic waste that junior sailing generates.

A Reminder about the club's new Adult Sailing program. If you'd like to get on one of the club's new sailboats geared towards adult learning, there's plenty of opportunity! Follow this link for more information.
